Fisichella: Kimi too quick
09/10/2005
Giancarlo Fisichella has claimed he was helpless to stop Kimi Raikkonen's dramatic triumph at the Japanese grand prix.
McLaren's Raikkonen overtook Renault's Fisichella on the last lap of the race to record victory at Suzuka and after starting from 17th on the grid.
The experienced Italian had led for the majority of the race, and had a 19 second cushion at one stage, before losing his lead to the flying Finn.
However Fisichella says there is nothing he could to do stop Raikkonen.
"I knew Kimi was quick and was catching me up," admitted Fisichella.
"Honestly I was pushing 100 per cent but he was much quicker than me. Maybe because I was a bit slow on the exit of the chicane and the hairpin.
"Anyway I did my best and second is still good for me. We are ahead again in the constructors' championship which is good."
With world champion Fernando Alonso finishing third, and McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya crashing out in the first lap of the race, Renault have reclaimed their lead in the constructor's standings.
The French manufacturer holds a two-point advantage over McLaren with just one race remaining.
