Four Lions make Fifa shortlist
13/10/2005
Fifa have today announced their shortlist for the 2005 world player of the year award with England contributing the second largest contingent.
Unsurprisingly, it is the Brazilians who dominate the 30-man list but there will be four members of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad competing for the most prestigious individual award in football.
National team skipper David Beckham makes the list, as do Chelsea star Frank Lampard, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Manchester United sensation Wayne Rooney.
Seven Brazilians are included in the shortlist with last year's winner Ronaldinho an expected returning member.
The Barcelona superstar is joined by national team-mates Adriano, Cafu, Kaka, Roberto Carlos, Robinho and Ronaldo.
There are five newcomers to the shortlist including Chelsea duo Ghanaian Michael Essien and Dutchman Arjen Robben as well as Bolton talisman Jay-Jay Okocha.
In all, there are ten nominees from the Premiership, the same number as from Spain's La Liga and one more than from Italy's Serie A.
The winner of the award will be announced at the Fifa world player of the year gala at the Zurich Opera House on December 19th.
