France take A1 double

09/10/2005

France's Nicolas Lapierre was victorious in both races at the second-ever A1 grand prix.

Lapierre, who started from pole position, pounced on a first corner incident at Lausitzring, Germany, to cruise to victory in the sprint event.

Switzerland finished second, followed by Brazil, whose Nelson Piquet picked up a bonus point for setting the race's fastest lap.

After giving his country its first every A1 win, Lapierre was made to work much harder to take the feature event.

Lapierre, who started pole on the grid, slipped to third on the opening lap after getting off the line sluggishly, being overtaken by Malaysia and Switzerland, only to reclaim his lead on the following lap.

Great Britain finished second in the race, which was reduced to 35 laps, with Canada third, New Zealand fourth and Switzerland fifth.

Early pit-stops helped the British team to move from 24th position to second place, with Brazil crashing out and Germany's Timo Scheider slipping down the grid, when in the third position, after problems during his first pit stop.
