Fulham chairman denies sale talks

25/10/2005

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has strongly refuted claims that he is planning on selling his club to the multi-millionaire gaming tycoon John Wallis.

Reports surfaced over the weekend suggesting that Al Fayed was in takeover talks with Wallis, rumours fuelled by Wallis' attendance at Fulham's 2-0 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

However, the Fulham chairman insists he is not planning on leaving Craven Cottage and added that his association with Wallis is based on discussions into the viability of Wallis' company Casino Fortune sponsoring the London team.

"My position remains clear since 1997, I have invested well over £130 million in Fulham with the long-term aim of seeing the club established amongst the world's very best," Al Fayed said.

"I am as committed to that dream as I have always been. This club is not for sale, period."

And Cottagers head coach Chris Coleman added his confidence that the chairman will remain in place.

"I have spoken to the chairman and he was as enthusiastic as he ever was," said Coleman.

"John Wallis was there on Saturday and I understand there have been talks about marketing but there is no truth in the story he wants to buy Fulham."
