Fulham overcome uninspiring Liverpool
22/10/2005
Liverpool were again disappointing after playing in Europe as Fulham claimed a deserved 2-0 victory on a day that Craven Cottage mourned the death of Fulham legend Johnny Haynes.
Liverpool failed to win in 12 games last term which followed playing in Europe and they again looked lacklustre as Fulham took control early on and hung on for the victory.
Fulham's goals came from Collins John and Luis Boa Morte but the victory owed much to the performance of substitute goalkeeper Tony Warner, who kept out late Liverpool pressure to safeguard the points.
Fulham begun brightly and should have been ahead inside six minutes when Steed Malbranque's cross gave Ahmad Elrich the opportunity to score in his first Premiership start, but the youngster failed to convert from six yards.
His miss didn't prove too costly in a dull first half as playmaker Claus Jensen played in Collins John behind the Liverpool defence on 33 minutes and the striker slipped the ball past Jose Reina.
Liverpool started to apply some pressure later on in the second half, but only after Mark Crossley had limped off with a hamstring injury and been replaced by Warner, a former Liverpool player.
Luis Garcia had his curling effort tipped round the post before Sami Hyypia's volley was superbly saved.
Fulham wrapped up the points in injury time as Malbranque fed captain Boa Morte, who finished from 12 yards.
