GB and Ireland retain Seve Trophy
25/09/2005
Great Britain and Ireland have beaten Continental Europe by five points to retain the Seve Trophy.
GB&I enjoyed a storming Sunday at the Wynyard, winning six holes and halving two to secure victory by 16½ points to 11½.
The win marks a dramatic turnaround for Colin Montgomeries team, who trailed 4-1 following the opening days play on Thursday.
"The team did really well to come back as they did - and did better than I thought they would after that start," Montgomerie said.
"Three wins in a row is great."
However, he admitted that he was personally disappointed with his own performance, going down 2&1 to European captain Jose Maria Olazabel in the opening tie of the day.
"It was a bit flat really. I'm not saying I was a bit stale, but I found myself more concerned with the scoreboard and there seemed to be less riding on it than 21 years ago," he explained.
Paul Casey, David Howell, Graeme McDowell and Stephen Dodd all won their singles match-ups, before Welshman Bradley Dredge secured GB&Is success with a 2&1 victory over Frances Thomas Levet.
Paul McGinley added another point, beating Miguel Angel Jiminez, before Nick Dougherty and Henrik Stenson shared the points in the final match of the tournament.
GB&I have now won the Seve Trophy for three years in a row.
