GB 'celebrate' Vainikolo absence
25/10/2005
Great Britain's rugby league team have welcomed the news that fearsome New Zealand star Lesley Vainikolo has been forced to withdraw from the Kiwi squad because of injury.
Nicknamed the Volcano, the Bradford Bulls winger has forged a formidable reputation during his time in the engage Super League and was expected to win his 13th New Zealand cap against Great Britain in the third Tri-Nations game at Loftus Road on Saturday.
But medical chiefs have ruled out the 26-year-old, who is still suffering the after-effects of post-season knee surgery, giving Brian Noble's side a welcome boost ahead of the crucial clash.
Vainikolo's Bulls team-mate Leon Pryce said the news has given his side encouragement but he admits it is always a shame when a player of such class is ruled out through injury.
"I would have liked to play against him because he's such a good player. He's also a good friend of mine. But I've seen him trample on many a winger in his time at Bradford and I wouldn't like to have been one of those wingers," Pryce said.
"In my opinion, he's the best winger in the world, without a shadow of doubt. He'll be missed by New Zealand but obviously it's a gain for Great Britain."
Bradford and Great Britain skipper Jamie Peacock added: "I wouldn't have minded having a go at tackling him but I'm pleased for Great Britain that he's a big loss to them."
Meanwhile, Kiwis coach Brian McClennan has voiced his frustration at losing Vainikolo after he was not even informed that the player was facing surgery.
"We found out last night that Les had to have a knee operation this morning and obviously we are very disappointed," McClennan said.
"What is really disappointing is that there is supposed to be a process and that process has not been followed.
"Bradford should have liaised with us and our doctor should have had the chance to have a look at him. He never got the chance to do that."
