GB clinches one shot trophy lead

24/09/2005

Great Britain and Ireland continued their comeback on the third day of the Seve Trophy to take a one-point advantage.

The home side lead 9.5-8.5, going into the singles, after Colin Montgomerie and Nick Dougherty's dramatic victory over Maarten Lafeber and Thomas Bjorn.

Continental Europe were 4-1 up after the first day and 6-4 at the start of play on Saturday, yet saw their advantage quickly disappear.

The GB side won the greensomes 3-1 in the morning session to bring the scores level at 7-7.

Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington beat Olazabal and Thomas Levet three and two, while David Howell and Paul Casey overcame Niclas Fasth and Peter Hanson, with the other two matches were both halved.

Great Britain and Ireland took this fine start into the afternoon session, which they edged 2.5-1.5.

Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley drew with Jean-Francois Remesy and Thomas Levet, yet only after Levet had missed a short putt which would have put the French pairing two up with three to play.

Paul Casey and David Howell beat Miguel Angel Jimenez and Emanuele Canonica, two and one, while Ian Poulter and Bradley Dredge were defeated by Henrik Stenson and Niclas Fasth to leave the tie finely poised.

However captain Colin Montgomerie led from the front with the Scot recording a one shot victory over Lafeber and Bjorn, alongside young Dougherty, giving Britain and Ireland a one-point lead going into the final day of the Seve Trophy.
