Gardner loses dismissal appeal
18/10/2005
Bolton Wanderers star Ricardo Gardner has had his claim for wrongful dismissal rejected by an FA disciplinary commission.
The Jamaican international, who plays either left-back or left-wing, was red carded for an intentional handball during his side's 5-1 hammering at the hands of Premiership champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
His foul was deemed to have prevented a certain goal-scoring opportunity for the home side but the player himself felt he had been unfairly dealt with by referee Rob Styles.
However, a panel reviewed the case and adjudged that Styles had acted properly and that Gardner's appeal had no substantial grounding.
He will now serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect, ruling him out of this Saturday's home match with West Brom.
Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers' defender Zurab Khizanishvili has had his claim for wrongful dismissal upheld.
The Georgian defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity against Liverpool on Saturday but today's reversal means he will not now serve any suspension.
