Giggs to undergo cheekbone op

20/10/2005

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs will have surgery on his cheekbone which was broken in the Reds' Champions League game against Lille earlier this week.

A spokeswoman for United said that the Welshman's fitness would be reassessed after the operation.

Giggs sustained the injury after a clash with Mathieu Bodmer during the second half of the 0-0 draw.

Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson originally blamed former Arsenal defender Stathis Tavlaridis for the injury.

But Tavlaridis protested his innocence, saying: "I'm sorry that Ryan Giggs is hurt but I can't take the blame for this incident because I didn't do it.

"It's clearly a case of mistaken identity and I would never intentionally hurt a player in the way that has been suggested."

The Reds are beset by injuries, with the likes of Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Wes Brown and Louis Saha all currently on the sidelines.

It is thought that Giggs will be out for several weeks with the fractured cheekbone.
