Given waiting on new deal
02/10/2005
Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given is keen to be offered a new contract at St James's Park.
The Irish international has firmly established himself in the number one jersey at Newcastle since his move from Blackburn Rovers in 1997.
And, although he is frustrated by the Magpies' failure to secure any silverware in recent years, Given has insisted that he wants to stay at the club.
The Irishman, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past, would like a new deal at Newcastle but any decision in that respect will be up to chairman Freddy Shepherd.
"I don't know if there is a timescale for contract talks because you need to ask the chairman that," said Given.
"But as far as I'm concerned, nothing has been mentioned yet.
"In an ideal world I'd like to win trophies at Newcastle. This is my ninth season here and I've strong feelings for the club and I'd like to be offered a new contract."
