Gloucester thrash rivals Bristol
09/10/2005
Gloucester thrashed Bristol 34-6 in the Powergen Cup on Sunday, closing in on a semi-final spot.
James Simpson-Daniel scored twice as Gloucester trounced their west country rivals for the second time this season.
Peter Buxton scored the game's opening try, giving Gloucester, who are unbeaten in the Guinness Premiership so far this season, an early lead at the Memorial Ground.
Two Jason Strange penalties put Bristol back in contention, only for Simpson-Daniel to go over, just before half-time, to put his side 20-6 ahead at the interval.
Mark Cornwall went over in the second period, before Simpson-Daniel scored on 67 minutes to claim a bonus point for his side.
Llanelli Scarlets also took a step closer to the semis with a dramatic 22-20 defeat of Newcastle.
Substitute Gareth Bowen secured the Scarlets' second consecutive victory in the competition with a penalty on 75 minutes.
Lee Byrne and Aled Gravelle went over in the first half for the Scarlets, with Mike Hercus adding a third in the second period.
Anthony Elliott and Tom May grabbed tries in either half for the Falcons, with Jonny Wilkinson, who played for 60 minutes of the match, creating both scores.
Saracens reignited their hopes of progressing in the competition with a convincing 32-13 triumph over London Irish at Vicarage road.
Sarries stormed to a 22-3 half time lead with tries from Kevin Sorrell, Paul Bailey and Kyran Bracken.
Rod Penney went over to give the Exiles a consolation score, before Rob Skirving's try ten minutes from time secured maximum points for the home side.
In Sunday's evening kick-off Bath defeated the Ospreys 27-20.
Bath took a 13-7 advantage over the Celtic League champions into the interval, with a Frikkie Welsh try and points from the boot of Ollie Barkley giving Bath the advantage after the home side had initially taken the lead through a penalty try.
A Matthew Jones try put the Ospreys back in front, at 20-13, only for Andy Williams to go over for the visitors.
A Chris Malone drop goal and two further Barkley penalties secured the victory for Bath.
