Gold backs Bruce

24/10/2005

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has received the backing of club chairman David Gold despite their disappointing start to the Premiership season.

The Blues lost for the third successive time on Saturday, going down 2-0 at the hands of Mark Hughes' Blackburn.

The result extended their win-less stretch in the league to nearly two months with fans having to look back to August's 3-2 win at West Brom to see the last time they picked up all three points.

They are currently in 18th place in the Premiership but Gold insists that Bruce has his full backing and he is confident that the St Andrews favourite will turn things around.

"It is a battle but, if I was going to pick a man to get us out of this dilemma, I couldn't pick a better man than Steve Bruce," Gold said.

"Steve and the staff and the players know we are in a difficult position. They know being in the bottom three is painful for the fans and the board and they know they've got a job to do.

"Steve takes this situation personally but we all know that one win can turn things around. We just need a couple of wins."

Bruce has been the subject of less supportive comments from Birmingham's co-owner David Sullivan but the coach insists he understands everyone's disappointment.

"We all know that we're in the mire. I've seen David Sullivan's comments and I can understand his frustration," he added.
