Gregan won't quit
02/10/2005
Australian rugby union captain George Gregan has insisted he will not stand down despite the Wallabies' poor form of late.
The Aussies have lost their last five matches in a row, which is their worst run in nearly 40 years.
But, despite their disappointing show in the Tri-Nations series, Gregan will be resisting calls for him to step down.
"I would not have put myself through the week I have been through if I was considering retirement," the 32-year-old Wallabies skipper told Australian TV.
"Retirement is something that is always around the corner. I am not starting my career, I am aware of that, but it is not something I have not faced in terms of setting time aside for it.
"I am aware of what I have to do to make a decision at the time."
Gregan himself is not happy with Australia's recent form but he believes that many of the defeats have been close run and that there are some positives to be taken.
"It was disappointing. You cannot run away from that fact. Anytime you lose four or five Tests, we lost five in a row, it is very disappointing. But the positive side is we got a lot of young players to experience Test match football," he added.
"[In Europe] consistency and performance is really important. It always comes back to key moments in Test matches and we lost of lot of close matches this year."
