Jewell demanding respect
08/11/2005
Wigan boss Paul Jewell believes his side are due more respect for their stunning achievement already this season.
The Latics are currently second in the Premiership after winning eight of the first 11 games and with just two defeats to their name, are just six points behind leaders Chelsea.
However, many are continuing to write off their chances of remaining in the chasing pack and although Jewell is refusing to get carried away, he is aggrieved by some corners' lack of respect.
"We've done fantastically well, I'm not going to deny that," Jewell told Sky Sports.
"But it was quite interesting, I was watching Manchester United versus Chelsea on Sunday and [presenter] Richard Keys said the lead was now ten points - I could have sworn it was six points - I thought we were second."
Jewell, who has won 107 of his 216 games at Wigan since moving to the JJB in June 2001, added: "I don't want to get too prickly about everything as we have still got a bit to do to convince people and also convince myself.
"I know we won't be second at the end of the season and we all know that. But if we stay in the league, it will be a major achievement. Anything else we do, if we manage that, will be amazing."
