Newey signs for Red Bull
08/11/2005
McLaren-Mercedes' technical director, Adrian Newey, will be joining the Red Bull Racing team for the start of the 2006 season.
Newey, who has spent eight years at McLaren and helped them to two drivers' titles, will leave McLaren next February to take up the post of chief technical director at Red Bull.
"Adrian was keen to take on a new challenge and I'm delighted that we managed to get him to join us," Red Bull sporting director Christian Horner said.
"His arrival sends out exactly the right message that we are totally serious about what we want to achieve in Formula One."
The 46-year-old nearly joined Jaguar racing, the team taken over by Red Bull, in 2001 but had a last-minute change of heart to stay with McLaren.
Newey has a massive reputation in F1, having been a key component of Williams' success in the early 1990s.
During his seven years at Williams between 1990 and 1997, they won five constructors' championships and four drivers' titles.
"Given the choice of Adrian or Michael Schumacher, I'd go for Adrian every time," Horner added.
