Sarries upset Biarritz
23/10/2005
Saracens recorded an upset in the first round of the Heineken Cup with a deserved 22-10 victory over Biarritz.
A Glen Jackson penalty on five minutes gave Saracens an early lead over last year's semi-finalists.
However the crowd at Vicarage Road had to wait until the end of the first period to see their side go further in front.
Sarries went into the interval 10-0 up after Ben Johnston's try was converted by man of the match Jackson, who scored a crucial 14 points for the home side.
Biarritz had to wait until the 56 minute to make an impression on the scoreboard, with Dimitri Yachvili kicking a penalty for the French side.
Hugh Vyvyan and Jackson both kicked drop goals, while Jackson also added two more penalties as Saracens exerted control on the matcg.
Julien Peyrelongue took some of the gloss off the scoreline, going over for Biarritz in the 80th minute with a consolation try, which was converted by Yachvili.
In the other three o'clock kick-off in the Heineken Cup on Sunday, Ospreys beat Stade Francais 13-8.
Despite being under pressure for large parts of the match, the home side secured victory with a late Matthew Jones penalty.
Sonny Parker went over for the Ospreys on 40 minutes, while Lucas Borges scored the visitors' only try on 67 minutes.
