Shearer hoping for speedy recovery

09/11/2005

Alan Shearer is confident that he will be back in action soon, after undergoing a hernia operation on Monday.

The 35-year-old Newcastle skipper returned to light training yesterday and did not feel any ill effects from the workout.

He admitted that he has been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks, leading him to opt to have the operation at the earliest possible opportunity.

"It was getting slowly but surely worse and it was inevitable I was going to need an operation at some stage," he told the Newcastle Chronicle.

"Rather than wait three or four weeks and miss more games, we thought it was a good idea if I had it now."

He is confident that he will return to the side before the end of the month and could even be fit in time for United's crunch clash with top-of-the-table Chelsea on November 19th.

The former England captain will be heartened by the progress of team-mate Stephen Carr, who underwent a similar hernia operation last Thursday.

Carr has already begun running again following the operation and is almost certain to be fit for the Chelsea game.

Toon boss Graeme Souness praised the efficiency of the German surgeon who carried out both operations.

"There’s a lady who operates and she must do something different because she gets them back very quickly," he said.
