Super Series future in doubt

17/10/2005

A top cricket official has hinted that the inaugural Super Series between Australia and the World team may not be returning to the international schedule in future.

The series ended this morning when Australia wrapped up a comprehensive 210-run victory on the fourth day of a six-day Test in Sydney, having won all three one-dayers in Melbourne.

Many have claimed that there is no incentive for the World players to do well and to give the kind of performances they might for their respective countries, which would explain this year's one-sided series.

Malcolm Speed, chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), said: "We need to go away and assess the concept, see what we can improve and whether we want to do it again.

"We've never actually said how often the series will be held."

And Speed rubbished rumours that the series would be held every four years like the World Cup.

"There's certainly no commitment to play this every four years," he said.

"It's not something we need to put on on a regular basis.

"This was just an opportunity to fill the gap and have an ICC event this year."

World skipper Graeme Smith of South Africa voiced what many have thought about the World team, saying: "You grow up dreaming of playing for your country. When you come here, you don't really know the guys you're playing with.

"There was something missing, if we're all honest. It was hard to find that extra 20 per cent you're pushing for."
