Three more qualify for World Cup
09/10/2005
Ecuador, Paraguay and Costa Rica have all qualified for the World Cup finals in Germany next summer.
Ecuador secured their place in the finals after drawing 0-0 with Uruguay, who could qualify for a play-off with Australia for a place in the finals if they beat Argentina on Wednesday, while Paraguay beat Venezuela 1-0 at home.
Meanwhile, Costa Rica qualified from the Central American zone after beating the United States, who have already qualified, 3-0.
The game will also be remembered as former Derby and West Ham striker, Paulo Wanchope, became Costa Rica's all-time leading goalscorer.
Wanchope netted in the 35th minute to bag his 43rd goal for his country.
The race for the play-off place in the South American section will go down to the final game, with three teams still able to claim fifth spot and the game against Australia.
While Uruguay are currently in fifth, they have a difficult game against Argentina.
Colombia and Chile are the other two teams who could qualify.
They played out a 1-1 draw yesterday and both sit one point behind Uruguay.
Colombia have to travel to Paraguay for their final game while Chile are at home to Ecuador.
