Udal ready for England debut

09/11/2005

Hampshire spinner Shaun Udal is ready if called upon to make his Test debut for England against Pakistan this weekend.

Udal will play in the first Test if England pick two spinners and if he is selected, he will be the fourth oldest debutant in England's history.

"The last couple of months have just been phenomenal and I thought winning the C&G Trophy with Hampshire this year was going to be the pinnacle of my career," Udal said.

"But to have played in tour matches for England is a dream come true."

The spinner took 44 wickets at just 18.9 runs in this year's County Championships to force his way into the squad and Udal also learned today that he will stay on in Pakistan as part of England's one-day squad.

Having missed out on a place in the starting 11 as part of the test squad in the 1994/5 Ashes series, the 36-year-old is delighted to have the opportunity to finally play for his country.

"It has certainly been a long wait, so if it does come my way on Saturday I hope I will be a lot better prepared than I was ten years ago," he added.
