Van Gisbergen saves Wasps
30/10/2005
Wasps sealed a 15-15 draw with Toulouse at the Causeway Stadium thanks to a last gasp Mark van Gisbergen penalty.
The hard-fought contest underlined why Toulouse and Wasps are regarded as the finest two club sides in Europe.
Van Gisbergen kicked all off Wasps' points and put his side in the lead on six minutes with a penalty.
A converted Gareth Thomas try put Toulouse in control ten minutes later, yet it was Wasps who led into the interval with van Gisbergen adding two more penalties in the five minutes prior to the half time.
Vincent Clerc opened the scoring in the second half, going over for Toulouse after a quick break away from centre Yannick Jauzion.
Van Gisbergen pulled the scores level with his fourth successful penalty of the game, only for a Frederic Michalak drop-goal to edge the visitors back into the lead and on course for victory.
Toulouse defended gallantly throughout the match and performed well, yet were denied victory by an Gisbergen who kicked his fifth penalty of the tie in the eighth minute of injury time to tie the contest.
Despite van Gisbergen's heroics, the Premiership champions' hopes of reaching the knock-out rounds of the Heineken Cup remains in doubt.
