Wenger calls for new points system

25/09/2005

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for a new points for goals system to be introduced to liven up football.

With attendances falling at a number of Premiership clubs, critics have claimed that English football is failing to entertain because it lacks creativity.

The Gunners boss thinks one potential solution could be to award extra points on the basis of goal difference per match.

"What could work is awarding points on the basis of the difference between the goals you score and the goals you concede," Wenger told the News of the World.

"You could get an extra point if there is a difference of three, like 3-0 or 5-2.

"That might encourage teams to keep on attacking when they have the lead. There would be an incentive."

Wenger, whose team were held to a 0-0 draw at West Ham yesterday, admits that it would be hard to change the game but believes that encouraging more attacking football would be a positive step.

"It is difficult to impose new rules but the intention should always be to win," he added.

"The most successful teams have always been attacking ones. Brazil have won more World Cups than anyone and Real Madrid more European trophies - both of them always play to win."
