World XI calls up Gayle
06/10/2005
Chris Gayle has been drafted into the World squad for the second Super Series one-dayer against Australia in Melbourne tomorrow.
The languid West Indian batsman replaces Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, who was the super sub in the World's 93-run defeat in the first one-dayer on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old has an excellent one-day record for the West Indies.
He averages nearly 39 with the bat, including 23 half-centuries and an astonishing 11 centuries in 118 one-day internationals.
He is also a useful off-spinner, having taken 100 wickets at an average of 31.11.
Gayle was originally brought into the World squad when Sachin Tendulkar, India's Little Master, failed to recover in time from an elbow injury.
