$10m golf tournament unveiled
19/11/2007
The European Tour has unveiled details of a new season finale in Dubai, set to be the richest golf tournament in the world in two years' time.
The Dubai World Championship will be played at the Jumeirah Golf Estates between November 19th and 22nd 2009.
It will feature a record-breaking prize fund of $10 million (£4.8 million) from which the winner will receive $1.67 million (£812,000).
The initial agreement means the tournament will run for at least five years until 2013 and it includes provision for the new European Tour international headquarters to be constructed at the same course.
The event will replace the Volvo Masters on the calendar and will become the new climax to the European Tour Order of Merit, which will be accumulate the moniker 'The Race to Dubai'.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the chairman of tournament organisers Dubai World, said: "At Jumeirah Golf Estates we are creating the world's leading residential golf community based around four of the world's leading courses.
"It is absolutely fitting therefore that we should welcome the world's leading tournament.
"This deal is yet another step in Dubai's evolution as one of the most important golf centres anywhere in the world. From golf tourism to world-beating golf communities to world-class tournaments we can claim to offer it all."
European Tour chief executive George O'Grady said: "This is so much more than a tournament sponsorship.
"It is a long term partnership which will see the European Tour and Dubai joining together to significantly enhance the game world-wide and take golf to a new level for spectators everywhere."
