Andersson Hed and Wakefield lead at Gleneagles
01/09/2007
Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed carded a superb third-round 66 to move to the top of the leaderboard in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles today.
Andersson Hed was down in 33rd place at the halfway mark, but his round today - which included nine birdies saw him grab a share of the lead with Englishman Simon Wakefield heading into the final round.
The players were hampered by gusty winds today and Andersson Hed's fine round was almost blighted by the conditions on the final hole.
As he tried to move his marker away on the 18th green the ball moved. Fearing a penalty, Andersson Hed called for the referee who decided there would be no penalty as the ball was moved by the wind.
"I wasn't worried about a penalty," said Andersson Hed. "I just wanted to check whether I had to move the ball back."
Andersson Hed has not won a tournament in 188 attempts and he revealed he almost missed this one after suffering from back spasms earlier in the week.
"I wasn't sure I'd be able to play but flew home and got some great help from the physio guys on Tour," he said. "I didn't hit a single practice shot on Wednesday, just a few putts."
Scotland's Marc Warren, who led the tournament after the first round, is second on eight under par. Defending champion Paul Casey, four under par, and Colin Montgomerie, five under par, could both challenge tomorrow.
