Appleby leads as Tiger looms
08/04/2007
Australia's Stuart Appleby leads the US Masters at two-over-par after another difficult day for scoring at the Augusta National course.
World number one Tiger Woods is just one shot back and is in contention for a fifth Green Jacket which looked to be beyond him at one stage yesterday.
Appleby started the third round in great form, picking up three birdies in the first four holes helping him to two-under and into the lead.
However, a bogey at the seventh and a triple bogey at the 17th brought him back to the rest of the field.
Woods shot an even-par 72 that could have been even better but for his bogey-bogey finish at the end of the round. But with one round to go the rest of the field will all be wary of his trademark final-day push for victory.
At the end of the day's play Woods said: "I'm looking forward to having an opportunity to win the championship."
Tied with Woods on three-over-par is England's Justin Rose who has been able to maintain his place near the top of the leaderboard all week.
Rose shot another round of 75 to leave him within touching distance of the leader.
Padraig Harrington, Zach Johnson and Vaughn Taylor are just behind Woods and Rose on four-over-par and all have a legitimate chance of claiming victory latter today.
Overnight leader Brett Wetterich had a day to forget carding an 11-over-par round that leaves him on nine-over for the tournament.
