Armour remains in contention despite double-bogey finish

07/06/2008

Tommy Armour III is tied for the lead of the Stanford St Jude Championship in Memphis despite making a double-bogey at the 18th hole.

Armour could have gained the outright lead at the halfway stage of the tournament but sent his drive into the lake – a costly error which saw him drop back to the chasing pack.

The American is on three-under-par, along with Michael Bradley, Jason Dufner, Dean Wilson, Gavin Coles and Marc Turnesa.

Virtually all the players struggled in the tricky conditions on Friday. High winds and a hard green making it tough for the players to post low scores.

Overnight leader Boo Weekley dropped back to even-par having made four bogeys, one double-bogey and a birdie in a score of 75.

By contrast his nearest rival, Armour, coped with the conditions relatively well, notching two birdies and a bogey on the front nine.

A birdie at the 16th gave him a two stroke lead over the rest of the field but he failed to take advantage following his wayward finish at the final hole.

Despite his error at the 18th Armour was pleased with his performance in general.

He said: "You've got to hit good shots, quality shots, and I hit a lot of them today and I played as good as I did yesterday."

Coles was one of the few players who flourished in the windy weather. An incredible error-free round elevated him from 69th place overnight to a tie for the lead after he carded a round of 64.

A further seven players, including Vijay Singh, are all within two shots of the leaders heading into the third round.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18628548-ADNFCR
