Baird leads at halfway in Zurich Classic on three-under
29/03/2008
Briny Baird heads the leaderboard after two rounds of the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
The American shot a three-under par 69 to take him to a one shot lead, with countryman Jay Williamson and Aussie Peter Lonard tied for second.
Baird opened with a bogey but recovered with back-to-back birdies on the last two holes to give the 35-year-old hopes of a first career win.
However, Baird said he felt that the score could have flattered him somewhat. He told reporters: "It's going to look like a solid round of golf,'' said Baird, 35, a veteran of eight seasons on the PGA TOUR. "But it didn't feel quite a good as the scorecard will make out.''
The tournament's halfway leader revealed that bad weather had put paid to his plans of a fishing trip on Monday, but Baird may well have to console himself with a cheque after a high placed finish at this weekend's event.
Meanwhile, Bubba Watson has apologised after pointing the finger at playing partners Steve Elkington and Shigeki Maruyama when he heard some movement while taking a shot.
The Florida man said: "Who knows what (the movement) was. I was already mad for the day and I just took it out on them and I shouldn't have."
