Bogeys continue to hamper Garcia's progress

11/05/2008

Sergio Garcia made costly errors towards the end of his round for the second consecutive day to hand the Players Championship lead to Paul Goydos.

Goydos is on seven-under-par heading into the final round and holds a one shot lead over Kenny Perry, while Garcia is a further two strokes adrift on four-under-par.

Despite a turbulent round the Spaniard had put himself in a good position as he headed towards the final few holes of the Sawgrass course.

He birdied the 16th hole to move into the lead but then bogeyed the 17th as he had the day before, even though he put his tee shot within ten feet of the hole, and then went on to bogey the 18th as well.

Goydos, by contrast, was able to birdie the 17th to stretch his lead, while Garcia's mistakes enabled him to put some daylight between himself and the Spaniard.

Perry is still in contention of claiming the title after another steady round. The American kept his errors to a minimum, making two birdies and two bogeys in his round of even-par.

Phil Mickelson, Jeff Quinny and Bernhard Langer are tied on two-under-par for the tournament. Mickelson took advantage of others falling away to move into fourth place with a round of one-under.

Langer suffered a terrible run after picking up two birdies on the opening two holes. After his early fortune the German made seven bogeys and two birdies as he lost contact with the leading group.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18588002-ADNFCR
