Bourdy wins maiden title

28/10/2007

France's Gregory Bourdy fired a final round of 67 to win the Mallorca Classic by two strokes.

The 25-year-old finished on 12-under after a bogey-free final round to finish ahead of England's Sam Little.

Little, 32, carded 67 but his hopes of victory were destroyed when he three-putted for a bogey on the 15th.

Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen (70) took third place at the Pula Golf Club on nine-under while Spain's Sergio Garcia finished on three-under.

But Bourdy stole the show to become the 18th first-time winner of the season and seal his place in next week's season-ending Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

Starting the day level with joint leader Derksen, Bourdy sunk birdies at the sixth, ninth and tenth holes.

The Bordeaux golfer rode his luck on the 16th when his shot trickled to within a foot of the water.

Bourdy, who pockets a winners' cheque for £238,000, said he was thrilled with winning his maiden title on the Tour.

"I did think it was in the water at the 16th so I was very relieved when I saw it bounce in the rough in front of the green," Bourdy said.

"It was a bit lucky but sometimes these little things go your way and perhaps that signifies that it is your day."

Meanwhile, Little was pleased with his best-ever finish to climb to 76th on the Order of Merit.

"It was my great escape, but playing like I have this week, showed me I was good enough not to have to struggle like I have," the Londoner said.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18333433-ADNFCR
