Cabrera and Els to contest World Match Play
13/10/2007
Ernie Els and Angel Cabrera will face off for the HSBC World Match Play after coming through their respective semi-final clashes.
Els, who was one down after the morning round, recovered to beat Henrik Stenson 3&2 while Cabrera hung on against Hunter Mohan to take his match 2&1.
The South African soon whittled away Stenson's halfway lead and established a commanding one of his own as he won at the first before sinking putts at the seventh, eighth and ninth to move three clear.
It proved too much ground for the Swede to make up and his challenge eventually collapsed two holes shy of the last.
"When I got my nose in front I felt relieved and free again
He [Cabrera] got me last year. He is going to be a tough opponent," Els told the BBC.
Cabrera had to withstand a late onslaught from his American opponent after he appeared to move decisively clear with six holes in hand after the fourth.
However Mohan stormed back into contention with six successive birdies to shut the gap to just two holes, but his momentum stopped short of carrying him to victory as Cabrera held off his charge over the closing stages to book his spot in tomorrow's showdown.
"I played some of my best golf. Hunter came back strong and it was a tight match and I am pleased to have won," Cabrera said.
