Cabrera leads at challenging Oakmont course

16/06/2007

Argentine Angel Cabrera leads the US Open by one shot after carding a second round of one-over-par, putting him on level par for the tournament at Oakmont.

American Bubba Watson is in second place while a group of four players tied for third place is one shot further back.

England's Paul Casey shot the round of the tournament to move into contention on three-over, having started the day in 104th place.

Cabrera made two bogies and one birdie on the front nine. He dropped two more shots at holes ten and 12 but managed to claim birdies at two of the par-three holes to remain at the top of the leaderboard.

Scoring has been high all week at Oakmont so Cabrera's 71 was consistent enough to hand him the tournament lead from Nick Dougherty, who shot a seven-over second round to put him five-over overall.

The Argentine said: "It's great to finish this way, but I've got to keep concentrating, the tournament really starts [on Saturday]."

Casey's rise on day two was immediate. Starting on the tenth tee he birdied three of the first five holes and picked up another shot at the 17th before bogeying the 18th.

Watson had a rollercoaster round, carding four birdies and six bogies to finish on one-over for the day.

Justin Rose is among the group on two-over-par. The Englishman's day started poorly with three dropped shots but he bounced back and found two birdies to card his second successive round of 71.

The 26-year-old is tied with Australia's Aaron Baddeley, Canada's Stephen Ames and Niclas Fasth of Sweden.
