Cabrera takes Singapore title
04/11/2007
Angel Cabrera has won the Singapore Open by one shot from Vijay Singh after sinking a birdie on the final hole.
Despite carding a round of one-over on the final day Cabrera was able to find the vital putt to finish on eight-under for the tournament, holding off Singh's late title charge.
The Fijian had started the day six shots behind the US Open champion but carded a round of four-under that had looked good enough to earn a playoff until the Argentinean holed out on the 18th green.
Cabrera was thankful for the eight-under 63 he shot in the second round that helped him build his lead and edge out Singh over the final holes.
He said: "It was very tough out there today and very windy. I did what I needed to do to win. I knew that Vijay was putting together a good round and playing well.
It was up to me to play well on the last two holes and I did that. I like challenges, I like tough courses."
It was a dramatic end to a tournament that had caused controversy throughout the game as a number of big names missed the end of season Volvo Masters on the European tour because of commitments already made to the Singapore event.
Lee Westwood, who had been at the centre of the row and had accused the European tour of "poor scheduling", finished a creditable fifth place on one-under-par.
The Englishman was in contention heading into the back nine but he eventually finished with a 74 that left him seven shots off the lead.
Adam Scott fell just short of his third consecutive title in Singapore. After carding a round of even par on the final day the Australian had to settle for third place on three-under.
