Cabrera tames Oakmont to take US Open
18/06/2007
Argentina's Angel Cabrera ended a difficult week triumphant at the Oakmont Country Club as he won his first ever US Open title by just one shot.
The 37-year-old did just enough, pipping world number one Tiger Woods and world number three Jim Furyk to the trophy despite two late bogeys on his final-day round of 69.
Cabrera dropped shots at the tricky 16th and 17th holes after holding a three-shot lead with three to play to give the dangerous American pair a sniff of victory.
But after Furyk bogeyed the 17th and Woods was unable to break par on the home straight as he left a birdie putt a few feet short on the 18th green, the Argentinean's five-over record for the tournament was enough on a challenging Oakmont course.
Former leader Nick Dougherty from England, along with countrymen Paul Casey and Justin Rose, fell from grace with badly-timed poor rounds.
Dougherty had led the tournament after day one but followed up his two-under-par first round of 68 with a 77, a 74 and a final-day 71 to end the tournament tied for seventh.
Casey had worked his way into contention with a 66 and a 72 in the second and third rounds but his six-over-par 76 on the final day ended his challenge as he finished joint-tenth on 11-over-par overall.
And Rose joined his fellow Englishman on 11-over with a final round of 76 – his worst of the tournament.
