Casey revival continues at K Club
06/07/2006
Paul Casey has extended his fine recent run of form by carding a six-under-par 66 on the first day of the Smurfit Kappa European Open at the K Club in Ireland.
The English star, who won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles last week, shot seven birdies during his round with just one bogey coming on the par-three eighth.
His round left him just one shot off the early clubhouse leaders, Sweden's Niclas Fasth and Welshman Bradley Dredge, the latter of whom enjoyed a faultless round with four successive birdies coming on the back nine.
Argentine Angel Cabrera matched Casey's score and shares third place after day one while Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Australian Peter O'Malley sit one place further back after shooting 67s.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington, in need of a good run of results if he is to be sure of his Ryder Cup place at this same venue in September, fired a two-under-par 70.
Among the day's late starters are Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Nick Dougherty and Darren Clarke, all of whom will be looking for crucial rankings points at this week's event.
