Choi surges into Hong Kong lead
15/11/2007
KJ Choi managed six birdies in seven holes on the back nine to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Hong Kong Open.
The Korean had a mixed bag in the first part of his round and made it to the turn firmly entrenched in the middle of the leaderboard on two under par.
However he stepped up his game from the tenth hole onwards, with six birdies in the next seven holes taking him to the top of the pile with two holes still to play.
He duly made pars on both to cap an impressive eight-under-par round of 62 - one shot clear of the second-placed man, Wales' Garry Houston.
Two Swedes ended the day in joint third: Fredrik Andersson Hed and European Ryder Cup star Robert Karlsson - who achieved the only bogey-free round of the day - finished with 64s, one shot behind Houston.
Scotland's Barry Hume, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Korea's Kang Wook-soon are all tied for fifth on five under par and are still well in contention at the Hong Kong golf club.
