Clarke primed for Ryder role

13/09/2006

Darren Clarke has today vowed to be on top form when he tees off for the European team in next week's Ryder Cup clash at the K Club in Dublin.

The 38-year-old Northern Irishman was an overwhelmingly popular wildcard selection of captain Ian Woosnam, following the sad death of his wife Heather last month.

And speaking today, Clarke has promised to repay their support by firing on all cylinders when the match gets underway despite having taken the past eight weeks away from the game.

Speaking ahead of the Madrid event he is playing in tomorrow, he said: "I'm not here to make up the numbers, that's for sure. I wanted to play some competitive golf before I played the Ryder Cup."

He added: "I do feel strong enough. In fact I am stronger altogether. I've had to face up to a lot of tough things. I hope I've come through it a better person.

"My game is fine and I'll be ready for the Ryder Cup. Without a doubt it will be emotional but I will get myself through it. My team will help, but I will get myself through the week."

Clarke is currently the K Club course record holder, a fact which certainly contributed to Woosnam's thinking when making his wildcard selection.

He also recently played the course and admits he is feeling confident of finding his top form. "The course was good, it was playing long and tough, so it will be a great test next week," he said.

"I wouldn't have played if I thought I couldn't have benefited the team and that was the bottom line."
