Clarke's caddie denies Woods interest

04/07/2007

Darren Clarke's caddie Billy Foster has denied he has been approached to team up with world number one Tiger Woods from next season.

The American is rumoured to be on the lookout for a replacement for long-time partner Steve Williams, who is thought to be close to stepping down.

The pair have been together for eight years with only a brief hiatus for the Presidents Cup in 2005 when Williams took time out to be present at the birth of his first child.

On that occasion, Foster stepped in to carry Woods' bag and he was reportedly impressed with the work he did. However, he has since denied talks with the big-hitting Californian.

"A few rumours are flying around, but I have not been approached," said the Englishman – who is himself a superb golfer but has always stated a reluctance to turn professional.

"I wish I could say it was true because it's the best job in the world - better even than Tiger's."

When Woods linked up with Foster two years ago he heralded the caddie's success with Clarke, saying "he's very good at what he does".

"There were a couple of guys I was considering, but I like his personality," Woods continued. "He's very competitive, very feisty and very similar to Stevie [Williams]."

Woods took a brief break from the game last month for the birth of his own first child with new wife Elin.

He has since confirmed that he will take part at the Open Championships, despite the new arrival which Woods had said could have disrupted his schedule this summer.
