Colombian Villegas wins maiden PGA Tour title
08/09/2008
Camilo Villegas has won his first-ever PGA Tour event after completing a two-shot victory over Dudley Hart at the BMW Championship.
The Colombian hit the front on the back nine of his final round at the Bellerive Country Club in St Louis and held off the challenge of the American, as well as fellow contenders Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim.
Villegas impressed in the pressure situation at the end of the fourth and final round, despite the presence of a charging Hart, who made five under for the day, on his heels.
In the end the South American's two-under-par 68, which gave him a 15 under overall score in Missouri, was enough to earn him the spoils and second place in the end-of-season playoff standings.
Fiji's Vijay Singh has all-but-secured enough points to win the FedEx Cup and the accompanying $10 million payout.
He must only complete four rounds at the Tour Championship in two weeks' time to seal top spot - only a failure to finish or a disqualification would allow Villegas to overhaul the substantial gap that exists courtesy of Singh's opening two tournament victories.
