Continental Europe with slender Seve Trophy lead

29/09/2007

Great Britain and Ireland won three of the four afternoon foursomes at the Seve Trophy today but still trailed Continental Europe nine and a half to eight and a half heading into tomorrow's singles matches.

It was a much-needed turn-around in fortunes for Nick Faldo's Great Britain and Ireland team after they had only won half a point from the morning greensomes at the Heritage golf course in Ireland.

Having trailed by eight and a half to five and a half from the morning session, a poor afternoon round would have all but ended Britain and Ireland's hopes of winning the Seve Trophy. But they got off to a brilliant start as English duo Justin Rose and Nick Dougherty beat unbeaten French pair Raphael Jacquelin and Gregory Havret 2&1.

Colin Montgomerie's disastrous Seve Trophy campaign continued as he and Graeme Storm lost four holes in a row to lose 3&2 to Robert Karlsson and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. Montgomerie has lost all his three matches in the tournament.

Great Britain and Ireland got back on track in the third match as Simon Dyson and Oliver Wilson edged out Sweden's Peter Hanson and Soren Hansen of Denmark 3&2.

In a crucial final match of the round, Phillip Archer and Bradley Dredge held their nerve in the final hole to record a two-hole win over Markus Brier and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Archer and Dredge took a one-shot lead into the final hole and they hit a solid par four, as Brier hit his second shot into the lake, to win the hole and match.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18299124-ADNFCR
