Curtis claims 84 Lumber Classic title
18/09/2006
Ben Curtis has stormed to his second PGA Tour title in three months by claiming a two-shot victory at the 84 Lumber Classic in Pennsylvania.
The American, who prior to this season had won just one title, albeit the Open in 2003, shot a final-round 70 to close on 14 under overall.
This was sufficient for a narrow lead over Charles Howell III who began the final day level with Curtis but slipped away after shooting a 72.
"It was great to pull off a win like that. I played extremely well all week," said Curtis, who also won the Booz Allen Classic in June.
"I compete out here to win. You want to play well, and this doesn't necessarily mean victories, but if you play well, it's a good feeling. But you want to win. That's why we play this game."
US-based Briton Greg Owen had been in contention for the title this week but he shot a disastrous closing-round 75 to crash to eight under and finish in tied eighth place.
Justin Rose also failed to sustain his early challenge and he carded a finishing 71 to leave him one shot further back in a share for 14th.
