Daly backs Monty for major win
19/07/2006
Former Open champion John Daly has said it is Colin Montgomerie's destiny to win a major championship.
The Scot has won the European Order of Merit eight times but has never grasped success at one of the four biggest tournaments in the sport.
The 43-year-old came so close at last month's US Open, double-bogeying the last to drop to second, but the American believes Montgomerie has it in him to win one before the end of his career.
"Colin has the game to win a major and it is going to happen as it is his destiny," Daly said.
"We all know he is a great champion and he has played some great majors and come close a few times but you cannot make yourself win a major, you have to let it happen."
Daly will be playing alongside Montgomerie and Australian Stuart Appleby when they tee off at Hoylake tomorrow.
The Scot has remained upbeat since Winged Foot and he believes the course on Merseyside suits his natural game.
"Yes, I feel it might suit me as I tend to keep the ball fairly straight and that's key around here," Montgomerie said.
"I'm confident, I'm playing well and I know where the ball is going, which is half the battle."
Montgomerie, Daly and Appleby are due to tee off at 08:58 BST.
