Darren: I want to be Captain Clarke

27/11/2006

Darren Clarke has revealed his ambition is to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup.

The Ulsterman has won four Ryder Cups from five opportunities and starred in Europe's triumph at the K Club in Ireland in September.

Clarke won all three of his singles matches in only his second tournament since the death of his wife Heather from cancer.

The 38-year-old said he hopes to play in two more Ryder Cups before hanging up his clubs.

"Hopefully I have got two or three years left in me yet," Clarke told Sky Sports News.

"I don't feel as old as I am so hopefully I have got a couple left.

"Captaincy is something I see in the future. Yes, I'd like to do it. It would be an honour to be asked to do it and it would be a challenge that I'd relish."

Clarke, who is tipped to win the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday, added that his experience makes him a strong candidate.

"I have played under five different captains and hopefully a few more to come at least," Clarke said.

"You try and learn from the guys who you have seen have been successful.

"I think I've noted a few things and noticed a few things about what they've done right and for the most part they have all done a great job, so if I do get the opportunity to do the job in the future hopefully I will be able to do something similar to what these guys have done."

Nick Faldo will captain Europe at Valhalla in Kentucky in 2008.
