Dates announced for 2010 Ryder Cup
28/03/2007
The 2010 Ryder Cup will take place at Celtic Manor in Wales and will be played in the week beginning September 27th, organisers have confirmed.
It will be the first time the tournament will be staged in Wales.
The course, which is near Newport on the south coast of the principality, was first unveiled as the host venue in September 2001 and the 38th Ryder Cup will be the next time the competition returns to this continent after last year's successful campaign.
In the 36th Ryder Cup, the European team, led by Celtic Manor's official bid ambassador Ian Woosnam, secured a comprehensive 18½ to 9½ victory their American counterparts at the K Club in County Kildare, Ireland.
Next year's event will be held at the Valhalla golf course in Louisville, Kentucky, as the United States team seek revenge for that reversal.
"Winning the bid to host the 2010 Ryder Cup gave Wales the opportunity to tell the world what it has to offer," Woosnam said when the original bid to host the tournament was successful.
And following a meeting with the first minister of the Welsh Assembly, Rhodri Morgan, the organisers settled on the dates in question.
"This means the countdown has truly begun for the first Ryder Cup in Wales," European Tour chief executive George O'Grady said today.
"We have had a meeting chaired by the First Minister and the preparations are excellent. It shows the commitment of Wales, and his personal commitment as well."
