Derksen leads Mallorca Classic

27/10/2007

Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen leads the Mallorca Classic by one shot despite not being able to finish his third round at the Pula Golf Club today due to bad light.

Derksen is on ten-under-par after 15 holes of the third round, a stroke ahead of French pair Gregory Bourdy and Jean-Francois Lucquin. Derksen and Lucquin, who also failed to finish his round, will have to come out before tomorrow's final round to finish their third rounds.

Sergio Garcia, who has not finished lower than second in his three previous appearances at the tournament, is five shots behind Derksen.

It was a good day for Englishman Richard Finch, who hit a fantastic round of 66 to leave himself on seven-under-par. The round will go a long way to help him cement his place on the European Tour for next season.

Finch started the tournament in 124th in the European Tour Order of Merit, with only the top 117 players keeping their card for next season. He is now in an excellent position to finish in the top 20 in the tournament which would guarantee his card for next season.

"In some ways the position I'm in is a good thing because at least I have a chance," Finch said.

"I'm fairly pleased with the way I'm playing and I just have to keep doing what I'm doing for one more round.

"It's the old cliche of playing one shot at a time and not thinking about what I need to do, what might happen, what might not happen.

"Even if I don't make it I think I'll be a better player for the experience I had at the start of the year when I missed so many cuts (12 out of 13 at one stage)," he added.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18333373-ADNFCR
