Eight-birdie Toms leads after Wachovia first round
02/05/2008
David Toms holds a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson and Jason Bohn after the first round of the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.
The American carded a superb eight-birdie round of 67 to finish five under par for the day, with his more consistent countrymen one shot back.
Toms registered four birdies in his first six holes and finished with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth to go into the clubhouse as clear leader.
Mickelson made five birdies in a steady round of 68, with his only bogey coming at the par-four 18th.
Bohn made sure he remained well in contention after the first day with three birdies on each of the front and back nine, although he also bogeyed the 18th, as well as the 12th, to end in a tie with Mickelson.
Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters champion, is one of nine players on three under par for the first round, along with Vaughn Taylor, Ben Curtis and Stephen Ames.
And Vijay Singh is still in touch after a two-under-par 70 along with the likes of Geoff Ogilvy and Rory Sabbatini.
