Els and Scott tied in Singapore

09/09/2006

Adam Scott and Ernie Els both went eight-under-par in the third round of the Singapore Open, setting up a compelling conclusion.

Reigning champion Scott, who has not won a tournament since his victory in Singapore last year, carded a six-under-par round of 66, to tie with South African Els, who hit a 69.

The leading pair go into the final round three shots ahead of Australian Brad Kennedy, himself one shot in front of Liang Wen-chong.

A two-hour break in play due to a threat of lightning allowed Els to have an injection to shake off a bout of food poisoning, after which he sank four birdies to retain his overnight lead.

Hitting five birdies, Australian Scott was one of only eight players to post an under-par score in front of a record crowd of 6,000 for the third round.

"It turned out to be a long day but I'm really happy with what I did today," said Scott. "I executed my game plan and when I got into trouble, I managed to get out of it without dropping a shot and made some birdies," the world number six added.

Englishman Lee Westwood, runner-up last year, is the leading European after three rounds and is tied on level par with Angel Cabrera of Argentina after hitting a 71 today.

Fellow countryman Chris Rodgers is five shots behind after scoring a 74 in the third round.

Scott Strange, tied with Els at the half-way stage, only managed a 78 and slipped back to tied 12th place after succumbing to a sore back.
