England's Luke Donald leads from Davis at Honda Classic
29/02/2008
English golfer Luke Donald leads from countryman Brian Davis after the first round of the Honda Classic in Florida.
Donald carded a six-under-par 64 in the first round at Palm Beach Gardens to move one shot clear of Davis on the opening day as both players enjoyed bogey-free rounds.
Davis' outing featured birdies on the first, eighth, tenth, 13th and 16th holes to go into the clubhouse with a solid score of 65, while Donald picked up shots on the third, fourth, tenth, 13th, 15th and 18th.
Australian Matt Jones is in third, two shots off the pace, after an opening-round 66 while a five-man group that includes Americans Jimmy Walker, Brett Quigley and Kevin Sutherland and South Africa's Ernie Els is still in touch on three under par.
Swedish veteran Jesper Parnevik turned back the clock with a good round of 68 to go in two under par, but it was a less impressive day for some other big names.
Home favourites David Duval, Duffy Waldorf and Fred Funk all carded two-over-par rounds of 72, along with another Englishman, Justin Rose.
Spain's Sergio Garcia and South Africa's Retief Goosen were both frustrated after first-day 73s, while Masters champion Zach Johnson could manage no better than a 74 after four bogies and a double-bogey on the par-four 16th.
