English duo take charge at Wentworth
24/05/2007
Englishmen Paul Broadhurst and Justin Rose are tied for the lead at the end of the first day of the PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The pair both finished with six-under rounds of 66 to ensure a one-shot overnight lead over a chasing pack of Australian Marcus Fraser, Francesco Molinari of Italy and England's Simon Khan.
Broadhurst was first back to the clubhouse after he followed a superb opening nine holes, that saw him reach the turn in just 30 strokes, with some solid play on the homeward leg.
Rose, by contrast, did his hard work in the closing stages as he picked up birdies on two of the final four holes to grab himself a share of the early lead.
In a day of strong scores there are still several big names well within striking distance of the leaders.
Padraig Harrington, fresh from his Irish Open win last week, posted a three-under 69, while Colin Montgomerie finished just a shot further back on 70.
Broadhurst admitted that his score represented a welcome return to form after failing to finish in the top ten at any event so far this season.
"That's definitely my best round here. I've been struggling and searching for answers, so I forgot about technique and just tried to score," he said.
